How does meta tag work?

  • Share this:

In HTML, the `meta` tag is used to provide metadata about the webpage. Metadata is information about the webpage that is not directly visible to the user but is used by browsers, search engines, and other applications to understand the content and context of the webpage.

The `meta` tag is placed in the `<head>` HTML document, and consists of a `name` attribute and an `content` attribute. The `name` attribute specifies the type of metadata being provided, while the `content` the attribute specifies the value of the metadata.

Here are some examples of common `meta` tags and their uses:

  • `<meta charset="utf-8">`: Specifies the character encoding used in the HTML document.
  • `<meta name="description" content="A brief description of the webpage">`: Provides a brief description of the webpage that may be displayed in search engine results or by other applications.
  • `<meta name="keywords" content="keyword1, keyword2, keyword3">`: Provides a list of keywords related to the webpage, which may be used by search engines to index the webpage.
  • `<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1">`: Controls the layout and zoom level of the webpage on different devices.

The `meta` the tag can also be used to provide other types of metadata, such as the author of the webpage, the expiration date of the webpage, and the relationship between the webpage and other web pages.

It's important to note that not all `meta` tags are recognized by all browsers or applications, and some may be ignored or treated differently depending on the context in which they are used.
